Winter swimming (also known as ice bathing) is a common practice in Finland and amongst biohackers. Although it might seem crazy that many Finns start their day with taking a dip in icy water, there are several health benefits linked to cold exposure which makes it a tempting practice.

In scientific studies it has been noticed that winter swimming can immediately improve mood, relief stress, relief pain, and relax. These benefits become stronger when ice bathing is regular.

In addition, regular exposure to cold may increase the function of brown fat tissue and thus help in weight management and fat burn. It can also reduce the tendency to feel cold and improve cold tolerance.

Ice bathing trains the nervous system. The nerve located in the face (specifically the trigeminal nerve which is linked to the vagus nerve) is especially sensitive to cold. By practicing cold thermogenesis using your face, you are improving your whole body's ability to withstand cold.

One of the "self improvement" things I am working on this year is to make friends with cold. For so long I was one of those people who are freezing all the time. I had chronically cold limbs and would not even consider swimming if it was not a hot summer day. 😨
At some point I got tired of it and decided to change. I wanted to explore what it is about cold that makes me shrivel, cower and therefore leaves me feeling weak. 
I started by letting my feet be cold and not reaching out for a double layer of wool socks. Then I moved on to finish my showers with ALMOST (:D such a cheater) cold water and from there into submerging in a cold bath at the sauna. Each time would feel so good right after. I felt fresh, awake, present in my body and empowered by my courage. I started to realise that the mind pattern that was telling me the cold was horrible and unpleasant is just bullshit. The cold was in my mind and not in the body. I was motivated to eliminate this pattern that was so obviously unserving. For this reason, the last three months I dedicated surrendering to the ocean and taking cold swims no matter the weather or my mood (ideally every day). All I have to do is to relax, breathe and remind myself that the moment I'm in the water all the struggles wash away.
I cannot even list all the wonders this practice has done for me but to name a few: I feel inner heat, don't react "negatively" when I feel cold and can sustain it longer, I feel stronger overall, grounded and more connected to my wild woman. 
I plan to continue into the winter and in not so far future to take up the Wim Hof's freezer challenge. Care to join? 🙃🐳

Having issues getting a full night’s rest?
Let’s discuss the 3 most common factors that are ruining your sleep. These are not in a specific order of importance.
1. Blue light after sunset  Blue light usually comes from our electronic/mobile devices. Cell phones, iPad, laptop, computer, TV.  This type of light replicates daytime.  Our body cannot tell the difference, and all it knows it ours eyes are being exposed to those wavelengths, sending signals to the rest of the body that it must be 11am, and not 9pm.  This means your body suppresses melatonin(sleep hormone) and starts to activate cortisol(wake up hormone) Do a red filter on your mobile device.  Wear blue blocker glasses, and try to keep your lights off in the house after sunset. 
2. EMF  nnEMFs (Non Native Electro Magnetic Fields) The World Health Organization on their website acknowledges that EMF’s do have a biological effect on our bodies and consider it a possible carcinogen(Class 2b carcinogen with the IRCOC). EMF’s influence brain activity.  Read that again(never mind..I’ll type it again) EMF’s influence brain activity.  Yeah...no thanks.  On top of influencing brain activity while trying to sleep, and near bedtime, EMF’s also raise your blood pressure, reduce melatonin, promote oxidative stress to brain and liver, and dehydrate your mitochondria.  How can you expect to get quality sleep when your body is in full defense mode just from EMFs? DO NOT have your wifi router in your room, ideally turn it off at night, and put your phone on airplane mode. @PrimalHacker recently made a post showing the difference in sleep from having phone near the head, compared to airplane mode. 
3. Eating too close to bed .  Once you eat, your digestion system is on full work mode for many many hours after your last bite.  Your body and organs cannot rest when digesting.  Eating within 2-3 hours before bed could be the worst thing you do for your circadian rhythm, and destroys your sleep. Your organs never got to rest. Eat your last meal, and non water beverage, at least 2 hours before you plan to go to bed. I stop eating after sunset.

Less clothes. More cold mountain water. Even though I did try it, I’ve never been able to be a beach girl. The rush and exhilaration experienced by dipping and swimming in cold water, for me, is the WAY. After I come out I’m always energized and my body feels brand new. It’s a great static stretch to open up your shoulders and chest.

I simply just hold this statically with no movement (as shown) for about 30 seconds.

A couple of things to keep in mind when doing this:
1) Pull the elbows as close together as you can
2) Activate your upper back muscles hard and pull the shoulder blades together as tightly as you can
3) Keep the core and butt muscles turned on as much as possible to prevent arching of the low back
4) Practice deep breathing in this position

When I visited #Bicolline, I found La Meute, a group of Vikings who'd gone out of their way to build a hall. They named it Niflheim, although there was nothing nefarious about it. In true Viking fashion, their hospitality didn't disappoint as we were soon invited inside their home, and later, sat with them by the fire pit.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But how did the Vikings of old actually built their homes?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Some 30 feet in length, long houses were constructed using reeds woven between wooden posts. The walls were then covered in clay, which served as a form of insulation against the elements. Being Canadian myself, I can’t imagine how cold Viking Age Scandinavians must have been inside those twig-thin walls. Then again, let's not forget our ancestors were more resilient to the elements than we are today, what with our central heatings and air conditioning units. For all of our technological advancement, we're actually weaker than our forefathers ever were. #WimHof, anyone?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Later in the Viking Age, the clay-covered reeds were replaced by wooden planks which have a higher index of thermal insulation--thank gods!  The inside of the long house was divided in different areas with the predominant and most important central area dedicated to an open fire pit. Considered the beating heart of the house, the pit served to cook food and keep the house lit in the dead of night. There was no chimney, so you can imagine how quickly the air got thick and stuffy, which must have been a challenge for infants and elderlies.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Connaissez-vous #WimHof ? C'est un homme ayant battu plus de 20 records du monde. Son truc ? Le froid.
.
Surnommé « l'homme de glace », il a développé un contrôle tel de son corps qu'il est capable de contrôler l'intensité de son système immunitaire.
.
Alors que tout le monde le pensait #impossible, il proposa à des #scientifiques d'expérimenter directement sur sa personne. On lui injecta donc directement des virus, des agents toxiques et autres substances afin de mesurer la réponse de son corps. Le résultat fut #exceptionnel.
.
Ses réponses immunitaires ont été très différentes de la plupart des gens, quasiment aucun symptômes ni fièvre. Étonnés, les scientifiques suspectèrent que @iceman_hof était génétiquement programmé pour être plus résistant et que ça n'avait rien à voir avec sa #technique particulière. 🧘‍♂️

Wim décida donc de former un groupe d'individus à ses #méthodes. Quelques mois plus tard, l'expérience fut répétée sur des gens "normaux" ayant suivi un #entrainement avec Wim.

Résultat similaire. Wim venait de prouver à la science qu'en travaillant sur soi en alliant le froid, la #méditation et des techniques de respiration, on pouvait reprendre le contrôle de son propre corps.

En parallèle, il continua de repousser toutes les limites du corps humain, escalader le #MontBlanc ⛰️ en short ou courir 20km sur le cercle polaire à pieds nus et uniquement habillé d'un short par -30 degrés, autant de choses qui ne l'effraient pas.

Lors de notre rencontre, après une longue discussion, je lui ai posé une question toute simple. Qu'est-ce qui te motive à continuer de repousser les limites ?

La réponse parle d'elle-même : l'Amour. 💙

Il me prend alors dans les bras et me dit : "Vas-y, prends une photo", puis : "Si tout ce que tu fais, tu le fais par Amour, rien ne peut te ralentir. C'est comme ça que je relève tous les défis, j'aime, tout, tout le monde, tout le temps."

After a wake up and yoga I get a wonderful breakfast. We talk more about the running project, butterflies and what all these little things do to me. I feel overwhelmed. After I pack I realize I need more time for writing, meditation, yoga. Breathing space.

Stefania calls a hotel nearby. La Lanterna. They have a room. I say goodbye with one of the smile cards I found. She puts it on the shelf. 
A 3 km easy run. At the hotel I feel the kindness. Family hotel. A bottle of water and a bed to let my thoughts go. I wake up around 1. A little stretching, a breathing session and a shower gets me into a peaceful lunch.

Ernesto serves me an incredible bruschetta and mushroom pasta. I talk and drink with the family, his father turned 79. Afterwards I get into a true writing mood. I lose track of time. What a feeling!

After a short powernap I use yoga and breathing to cleanse my body even more. On to diner. I get the best pizza on my journey so far. The evening ends with a mix of writing, watching tennis en drinking and laughing with the family. Ernesto tells me he is going to write a story for a newspaper here. We exhange photos and info. He is off for a celebration, he says I'm part of the family. With that incredible gift I finish my writing and find my bed.

Saturday was a tough old day for me. I say old, because that’s exactly how I felt.
I’d had a busy week; talks, podcasts, coaching, writing, family life, lands end to John o’ Groats logistics; sustainability experts, influencers, accomodation, sponsorship conversations and lots of barefoot shenanigans in preparation for even more barefoot shenanigans.
.
With all of the above I’d hit the dreaded “overwhelm” and “overtrain”. Overtrain on its own, fine. Overwhelm on its own, fine. But when you mix these two f**kers together it’s all “over you”.
.
Everything just felt on top. And with no where to hide from the raw pain, I knew there was only one place for me. And that was the pain cave!
.
I was well aware of what was waiting for me in the darkness at the back of that cave. This isn’t the first time I’ve been in contact with the grizzly bear, only this time I welcomed my time with this wise old being, and surrendered to hear the lessons.
.
And what did that grizzly bear share?
.
You have all the answers. This is happening for you, not to you. Just stop talking about being human, and instead simply go forth and be more human. And with all the pain cave, bear share profundity -  I got up and stepped out into the light.
.
Here’s a 📸 of me stepping out of the cave into the light on the Sunday morning. Grinning from ear to ear. And I’d say I’m feeling much more human now with a new PB (profoundly best) of 10 Minutes 20 seconds in the boom box.

Minha  mente julgadora um tempo atrás já pensou: que loucura esse WIM HOF -  até que me abri para essa incrível experiência de conexão e integração com tudo que acredito na vida e em meu trabalho ! Aqui vai minha uma reflexão sobre a minha imersão no gelo. O gelo pode ser visto como nossa mente divagadora, julgadora, preocupações com futuro, aprisionamentos no passado, pensamentos disfuncionais, os lixos acumulados na vida, nossas defesas, ego, fatores externos negativos, nossos medos, vulnerabilidades, nossos escapes psicológicos  etc... isso tudo que gera dor e desconforto e fugir não resolve e nem nos ajuda no enfrentamento. Tudo isso está lá, exatamente como é.  Mas se nos voltarmos para o enorme potencial do foco na respiração, ela poderá nos ajudar muito a não nos deixarmos enredar com tudo isso. Focar totalmente momento presente, e experimentar cada segundo se transforma numa eternidade. Focar tanto na respiração entrando em processo meditativo a ponto de não sentirmos mais o desconforto. E@começar a me sentir bem ali. Mesmo tendo consciência de que ele poderá existir. Mergulhar tanto para dentro, a ponto de acessar nosso diamante interno (DEUS/AMOR) que nos habita, nossa Fortaleza mental... Sem dúvidas uma prova de superação, integridade, aprendizado único e humildade. Qualquer pessoa pode realizar seu mergulho interior com treino de Mindfulness / meditação com foco na respiração, terapia e muita vontade de realizar esse mergulho em si mesmo ! 
Existem muitas formas de acessarmos nossa sabedoria, integrando toda experiência que  já vivemos até aqui e que já nos ensinaram muito com grande desejo de a cada momento se conhecer melhor, se aceitar melhor e sem jamais perder as esperanças de se tornar melhor ! What I looked like around the time of getting floxed. I went from being able to deadlift over 500lbs, clean 315lbs, and leg press over 1,000lbs for sets of 12 reps to not being able to drive a car most days and not being able to stand on my feet even to wash dishes. Years of disability that doctors simply told me was fibromyalgia and depression. Luckily I resisted their recommended treatment of more useless pills and continued to research for years to finally stumble upon the truth of what happened to me. Their incompetence. No one warned me about Fluoroquinolone toxicity. No doctor out of the many that I saw even considered it. I can only sit in horror thinking of the others that are in a similar situation. Years of my life gone spent in excruciating pain. I am recovering using the #ancientchallenges - fasting, diet, and wim hof method. Also for anyone suffering from this you need to load up on magnesium. Epsom salt baths will help. It is a long road out.
