The short answer: No, calories are not created equal. 🙅
For many, calories are king because of the concept of calories in vs. calories out. But that school of thought completely ignores a lot of different factors that are more important. 👩🏫
Different foods and macronutrients affect the hormones and brain centers that control hunger and eating behavior. The foods you eat can have a huge impact on the biological processes that control when what and how much you eat. 🧠
For example, eating over 5ish cups of broccoli 🥦(450g) vs. eating 3 Oreos 🍪. Both would be around 160 calories but would have very different results.
One fills you with nutrients and thanks to the fiber and bulk is much more satisfying on hunger levels 🤰. While the other isn't very nutritious and will leave you hugely unsatisfied 👎 and reaching back into that bag of Oreos for more.
Another point to consider is the thermic effect of foods. The thermic effect of food (TEF) 💦 refers to the number of calories we burn in the process of digesting and absorbing the food we ate.
In a study where people were fed an equal calorie meal, one of a whole food meal and one of a processed food meal, those who ate the whole food meal burned almost 50% more calories. 🔥
You can just imagine how much more energy it would take to digest that broccoli vs. those Oreos. 👊
For those reasons, many diets that focus solely on calories fail. 🤷♀️
Whole plant foods tend to be the most nutrient-dense and least calorie-dense foods. Also, the process it would take to digest these foods will burn more calories.🌿
With that, I advise you to become a nutrient seeker, not just a calorie counter! Your mind and body will thank you! 🤟

Only you can hold yourself back and only you can help yourself.
We have two options; make progress or make excuses.
If you want to get stronger; you have to lift heavy weights.
If it’s a six pack you’re after? you have to put in the work in the kitchen and lose the layer of fat first.
I wish there was an easier way, but there isn't. We know there is no such thing as a shortcut, yet we continue to search for them.
There’s a constant battle taking place in our own mind.
And the only one that can do anything about it is you.

TRUTH- I don’t think my stretch marks are beautiful. I don’t think my misshaped belly button is beautiful. I don’t think my loose skin is beautiful either.
It is implied that if we truly love ourselves, we must love it ALL and so I’m often asked, how can we love ourselves and want to change simultaneously?
I don’t love the bags under me eyes. I don’t love my feet (or anyone else’s). I don’t love my anxiety, panic attacks or depression. I don’t love the weird thing my hair does that keeps me from having bangs.
Although I dislike those things, I still love who I am. How? Because I know that although I have my preferences, those things do not nor will they ever define my worth or my value. I accept them but give them no power.
If you don’t love every single detail about yourself, let that be okay. It doesn’t mean you’ve failed at this self-love thing.
Do yourself a favor and explore the idea of Radical Acceptance because it’s empowering AF. I don’t pretend not to see my flaws, I accept them. I do not beat myself up about them and I do not try to change them.
It’s the most curious paradox, isn’t it? We must accept ourselves as we are before what we are can change. Choose to radically accept yourself, release the emotional suffering and feel the internal shift❤️ love you all xo
