On a day to day basis there is really very little we have to do to keep our bodies running. We have to eat, drink, move, and sleep but all the ‘heavy lifting’ of keeping us alive is done by the life force that runs through each and every one of us. We don’t have to beat our own hearts, digest our own food, make hormones or breathe our own lungs. When we cut ourselves, or our body comes into contact with a bacteria or virus, our amazing immune system mounts a response and heals us. This self-correcting mechanism to bring the body back into balance is in-built – there is nothing we need to do. ⠀
⠀
Our psychological system also has this in-built, self-correcting mechanism. However we haven’t always been shown that this is so. We are taught to believe that when our mind is out of whack (that’s a technical term!), we have to do something to right it…..think positively, meditate, go for a walk, do yoga….And worse we are led to believe that there is something wrong with us if our mind isn’t as it ‘should’ be. ⠀
I feel sure that the infinitely intelligent energy that powers the universe, that provides a self-healing mechanism for the body, also provides one for our minds. ⠀
⠀
We all experience days when our mind is busy, or we are in a low mood. That’s a normal part of being human. What if we don’t take this so personally, so seriously, and just rest in the knowing that are mind will correct itself in time? ⠀
⠀
If we take time to notice, maybe we will see that without us having to do anything, eventually our mind will settle back down, and we will feel peaceful or ‘ourselves’ again. If we can get out of the way by not taking our current state of mind so seriously, healing of our minds will happen, just as it happens for the body. It may not be within a time frame our ego is happy with, but we always return to clarity in the end. ⠀

The peaks and troughs of the human experience are like the very ebb and flow of the universe we get to call home. The universe contracts and expands, and as a mini-version of this universe, we contract and expand to. As we breathe in and out, so does the universe. ⠀

If you are in a ‘trough’ of this experience, know that you are NOT your thoughts, beliefs, experiences, memories, feelings, body or mind. ⠀
⠀
You are a Soul, this One divine energy, having a human holiday. You are both a human being having very human experiences, AND you are an expression of the animating energy of the universe. ⠀
⠀
As one of my beautiful teachers @rudikennard says “Freedom is allowing all states of mind as they are”. It is the mind that creates our experiences of life and this energy is ever changing. So please know, this too will pass. The experience will pass all on its own. ⠀
⠀
And until that time know you already have all the resilience and wisdom you need within you, dear one. More love is always the answer to any question. ⠀

Human beings have a tendency to see the attitude that they bring to a situation, circumstance or a person as a requirement. .

They tend to view life through the lens of A always = B. For example “Of course I feel this way or react like this because - (insert situation, person or circumstance here)

However what if this simply isn’t true? .
.

What if we knew that every single person on this planet without exception has an incredible unlimited capacity to have any experience around any situation? .

That in fact how we show up to anything is always without exception optional and never a requirement.

I’m facilitating an intensive over a few days with a couple right now and this is the space we are starting from and the implications for them from this space are limitless.

That in my mind is pure potential.

One of the most helpful things I have ever seen when it comes to experiencing greater levels of well being, fulfillment, and calm is the role that thought plays in creating my reality.
.
The fact is the content of our thinking is never the problem.
.
We tend to give it far more respect than it ever actually deserves.
.
Seeing this gives us the capacity to see beyond our own thinking because It no longer makes sense to use our own mind as a guide and an indicator of truth.
.
Which is life changing for our levels of wellbeing, the quality of our relationships and the way we show up to life x
When we feel discomfort within ourselves, is it possible to let it be and not try to fix it? Whether this is emotional discomfort, mental, spiritual or physical. As humans I believe we naturally err towards feeling good. We know that our innate selves are ones of joy, peace, love and ease. However we don’t experience this all the time….we aren’t meant to. ⠀
⠀
I have found that when we try to fix discomfort with food, phones, alcohol, shopping (you can name you preferred method!) it may seem to alleviate the discomfort but it isn’t a permanent fix. And it tends to bring its own problems in its wake. ⠀
⠀
Another way we can try to escape the discomfort it to go into our head and analyse why this experience is happening to us, so we can either fix it now or prevent it happening again in the future. It all gets a bit messy!⠀
⠀
What if, we could simply allow the discomfort to be there? To see that is passes all on its own when it is ready. We are designed this way, for all experience to change. Not getting up into our heads about it (which only prolongs the agony) and just noticing what is, often brings a shift anyway. We know that a bee sting will stop hurting all by itself, and so too we can know that any other type of discomfort will pass too. ⠀

The experience of discomfort it coming from within us, and the passing of that discomfort also comes from within. ⠀
⠀

Many people innocently see their reactions to life as a requirement, as though they have no options when it comes to how they respond to events, experiences and situations. .
They see things through the lens of; if something doesn’t go their way then of course they are going to feel a certain way. For example, “ Naturally I’m upset, my son broke his computer screen” or “Of course I’m angry I just got a speeding ticket” or “I am stressed because I have this big job interview on Friday”. .
I know this so well because that’s the lens I used to see life through. That my reactions were dependent upon what was happening around me. On the surface it certainly looks and feels as though this is how things work, however what if this isn’t the case, that our external world determines our internal world. .
What if we knew that we ALL have the potential for ANY experience regardless of what is going on around us.  Imagine the power of seeing this in your relationships and your life? That what you are feeling is not dependent upon the actions of another and in fact every reaction or experience we feel is never a requirement, merely an optional extra.

Not only that but each and every one of us have the capacity for any type of experience regardless of our external circumstances.  This is the truth that I help point people to and when they see it, it’s the most freeing feeling in the world, which is wonderful news for our mental health, our levels of peace and calm and of course our relationships. 😊

It’s #worldnatureday today. ⠀

I am reminded how amazing nature is. There is an energy that powers all of nature, an innate intelligence if you like. It knows exactly when a plant should begin another cycle of growth. This intelligence also knows how to spin the planets, beat our hearts, breathe our bodies, to make the sun rise and set, keeps gravity in place. ⠀

In short it is a universal power much greater than ourselves. ⠀
⠀
We can always rely on this universal power because we are not part of nature, we ARE nature in human form. We can rely on it as much as all of nature relies on it, to keep life flowing through all of this beautiful planet. ⠀

I love the simplicity and ordinary-ness of this way of seeing how our thinking works. ⠀

We are led to believe that what we think has to be taken seriously, is TRUE and is to be believed…no matter the content. If I think it, it MUST be true!⠀
⠀
In and of themselves, thoughts have no power. It’s only when we ‘give’ them power by paying attention to them, focusing on them and believing them that we may come unstuck. ⠀
⠀
Thought energy is meant to flow through us, not get stuck within us. Even when we try to ‘think’ positively, whilst this can mean a happier experience, it still gives thought more power than we need to. If we can see beyond the positive and negative of thoughts, and see that we are the space, or consciousness, within which they arise, this is where the juice is at. It is only when we ‘buy’ into a specific thought or set of thoughts that they start to impact our lives; if we don’t they pass on through and have no power. ⠀
⠀
When we aren’t invested in our thinking so much, I find we get to experience that deeper part of ourselves in a more tangible way – the part of us that is made of the same the innate intelligence or energy that powers the whole universe. ⠀
⠀
Next time you find yourself believing or ruminating on an unhelpful, negative or painful thought, maybe ask yourself: ‘Am I innocently adding the hot water to this tea bag?’ See if you can see that the thought has no substance other than what you giving it. ⠀

It never fails to amuse me how true this quote is. Time and again I find in my own life, that when solutions appear complicated, inevitably I have been listening to my intellect or personal thinking, which is limited. When I open up to that which is limitless - wisdom, spirit, divine, god, mind - whatever name you want to give it, the solution is always much simpler than I thought. ⠀

If I forget this truth, I find I am not as compassionate with others as I would like to be. They look wrong, and I look right, and this brings suffering and discord. ⠀

We all live in separate realities according to our thinking about what is happening in life. We can never expect someone to have the same thinking as us, and the more we can embrace this, the more love and peace we experience. ⠀
⠀
Luckily, human thinking and consciousness is an ever evolving mechanism. As we have an insight (or sight from within) our level of consciousness raises, and our behaviours, actions and words change. And naturally our ‘best’ changes along with it. ⠀
⠀
Understanding deeply that we all live in separate realities takes the blame, shame and judgment out of human interactions. This doesn’t mean we don’t do things to keep people safe. But I believe this is the way we will eventually have world peace -  when we don’t judge others for their view that differs from ours. ⠀
⠀
Peace comes (both individual and global) when we see that we are all one energy expressing in different forms - I am You, You are Me, we are One. ⠀

Today is not business as usual, in honour of the largest climate strike in Australian history.
.
I’m so proud of these kids today, the next generation, taking action and shouting loud about the climate crisis that affects us all - but especially them.
.
This is their future we’re talking about, not ours, and we need to get educated and proactive about what that means.
.
While I may be just one individual, I want to add my voice to theirs, to create a better, cleaner, renewable world for our children and their children to come 🌿
We can view our thoughts and thinking as like a train pulling into the station. ⠀
⠀
We may have a certain thought, let’s say “I’m not good enough” or “I’m a failure” and we can metaphorically ‘jump’ on the train of that thought and follow it, believing it to be true. We’ll hear all the ways we aren’t good enough or we are a failure – “I shouted at the kids this morning, I’m a terrible parent” or “I didn’t get that promotion at work, I’m useless” or “If I had my life together I would be in a relationship” or “If I wasn’t overweight I would be happy” etc. etc. You get my drift…⠀
⠀
What if we have the possibility of standing on the platform and observing the trains of thought passing through, rather than jumping on the train and going who knows where on that train? When we are standing on the platform the flow of new, insightful thought is much more likely to come to us. ⠀
⠀
I have found no good comes from jumping on that metaphorical train, especially with painful thinking. It only serves to send us further into our heads and into the realm of thoughts we have experienced before….nothing new or fresh tends to come along. And then we may start to think WE are stuck, rather than simply we are EXPERIENCING stuck, old, repetitive thinking. ⠀
⠀
Next time you find yourself already on a train of thought, see if your awareness reminds you that you don’t have to be on this train and can get off at any station. Can you be the observer of the trains of thought?⠀

From the moment we’re born, we’re taught that we need to add to ourselves.
.
We’re taught that we have to improve and evolve. We have to find our purpose. We have to justify our existence. We have to work on ourselves. We have to become the best version of ourselves we can be.
.
As if we are not enough, just as we are.
.
But the truth is, there’s nothing to add.
.
Nothing extra you need to be.
.
From the moment we took our first breath, that was all that was required.
.
And when you see that, there’s so much more room to be in the moment, to sit in a space of love and acceptance and connection.
.
To delight in the simple, beautiful everyday things that life has to offer, to experience the incredible variety and diversity that’s all around us.
.
When you’re not working so hard to add things, you can savour the richness and fullness of a single moment - without rushing headlong into the next, without thinking that there is something more that you have to do, or be, or bring.
.
We are all walking miracles. Every single one of us. It’s extraordinary that we’re even here at all.
.
There’s nothing more for us to add, just more for us to see - of what already is.
.
Because it’s already all there. It’s already been given to us, we’ve been handed everything we’ll ever need.
.
You are already the best version of yourself, just as you are, right now. You are already everything you need to be x
Almost every human being on earth experiences stress, worry and overwhelm. And as a consequence we can find ourselves frequently saying to others, “I am so stressed”, or “I guess I’m just a worrier” or “I have no time, and too much to do”. ⠀
⠀
Whilst we innocently say these things in our everyday language, what this points to is that we believe we ARE the experience we are having, we identify it as who we are. So if we feel stressed, we are a stressed person. Or if we find we worry a lot, we are an anxious person. Or we are easily overwhelmed. ⠀
⠀
However when we can see that the type of person we are is not dictated by the experiences we are currently having, we can find some separation…some distance between the current experience we have, and who we really are. In spite of what is flowing through our senses right now. ⠀
⠀
Stress, worry and overwhelm do not come from the outside events in our life, but from our thinking about those events, or people or circumstances. This is an important distinction. Yes we get to experience feelings of stress, worry and overwhelm but it isn’t who we are. Thought, creating feeling, is transitory and moves all by itself, so we are never stuck in one experience or emotion. ⠀
⠀
During times when we aren’t feeling our best, or may be caught in a thought-storm about something, it is so beneficial to be able to see this: ⠀
• Feelings aren’t coming from the outside world but from within us, via thought in the moment. ⠀
• Thought in the moment changes all by itself, without us having to do a thing. ⠀
• What we think and experience isn’t who we are; we are the awareness that is able to observe all our experiences, emotions and reactions. ⠀

I’m sitting here on my friend’s balcony in beautiful, sunny Brisbane and it’s 30 degrees, people.
.
Just let that sink in for a moment. 30 degrees. To say that I’m enjoying this immensely would be the understatement of the century.
.
So delightful to be here and just rest quietly for a few days, to have precious time to myself to recharge and recalibrate, what joy and bliss that is!
.
I’m thinking back to the incredible practitioner training, Deepen Your Impact, that I facilitated with @barb_p this week - the last in our series of events on the Mornington Peninsula, in Melbourne.
.
This is what being of service is all about. It is honestly such a beautiful conversation. I have goosebumps just thinking about it.
.
For the practitioners who attended, knowing that all they have to do is show up and point a human being back to wholeness, and watch them wake up to the truth of who they are - and knowing that’s all that is required.
.
It doesn’t matter who is in front of us, a CEO, a stay at home parent, a teenager, a child. It’s an incredible, generative space, rich with potential. And it does all the heavy lifting in a session.
.
Being able to have this conversation in such a way, with people who want to go out in the world and have profound impact with others, was an unbelievably fulfilling experience. I am just so grateful to have this understanding in my life and in my work.
.
The practitioner training was the start of something I have long dreamed about, to create an environment where practitioners can step into that space. And it was beyond wonderful to share that with Barb.
.
And so it will continue. Barb and I will be running a 12-week virtual program for practitioners, starting October 26th. More details coming soon.
.
For now though, I’m getting back to soaking up this delicious, glorious sunshine x

Things are changing for sure; a stiff upper lip is no longer considered the ultimate standard of emotional intelligence. But we need to be aware that STILL, the belief that this 👆🏼 is NOT really possible runs deep in our conditioning.
.
We have all kinds of stories here;
.
📖 That only ‘rich’ people have time to sit with and look at their feelings
.
📖 That it’s not ‘real life’ or practical to do anything but put on a brave face and think ‘positive’
.
📖 That negative feelings are a sign of weakness - and boys, especially, don’t cry
.
📖 That if we allow ourselves to fully feel something, we may become overwhelmed and swamped with negativity and never see the sun again
.
📖 That we cannot handle the degree of pain coming up, that it will quite literally immobilise or quash us
.
Holding onto these stories and keeping feelings at bay in whatever form it takes, requires a lot of energy. It also means we live in a constant state of fear that we may not be able to sustain keeping these feelings away, that at any moment we will succumb and our wellbeing will be at risk.
.
But what we don’t always know or remember is that fully expressed feelings have a natural life span - they pass through on their own and our system is designed to always re-calibrate back to wellbeing.  And because of this, it’s a much less stressful and more authentic and freeing way to live.
.
So the next time you feel any kind of shit, what if you could just allow that feeling in, welcome it, acknowledge and lean into it? Feel where it’s showing up in your body, give it full, conscious permission to be there and stick around as long as it needs.
.
And notice what happens. That’s it - easy as pie 😊 Who needs therapy or coaching anyway?!🙄😜

Right now, believe it or not, I’m sitting in the beautiful Cathedral of St Stephen, after delivering a keynote presentation today on relationships to the Archdiocese of Brisbane (never a dull moment).

Reflecting on R U OK Day and I know that for many people it can be a little polarising because while it brings awareness to mental health, for others it’s well what about all the other days of the year.
.
Anything that brings awareness is a good thing. And checking in on the people around you is also a good thing. But it’s the space that you’re coming from when you’re checking in on them that really matters.
.
Are you checking in from a space of worry and concern and upset, where you see another person as broken, where you see a lack in someone else?
.
Or are you checking in from a space of love and compassion where you see that person as whole and complete?
.
When we come from a space of love and understanding, we see that person very differently, than when we come from a space of worry, concern and lack.
.
Concern creates concern.
.
Love touches and impacts people.
.
What’s extraordinary to me is that when I can see past another human being’s suffering, I can see the gift of who they truly are.
.
And that impacts them and takes them away from the thing that they’re gripped with and it opens a crack to let the light in.

Since coming across a new paradigm of how the human experience is created, I have seen that who I am, who we all are, isn’t a fixed ‘thing’. It isn’t a ‘thing’ at all. Who we believe ourselves to be is merely a collection of thoughts, beliefs and conditioning we have innocently picked up along the way.  And these thoughts and beliefs are subject to change all the time, depending on our mood, or what thoughts we are experiencing on any given day. ⠀

I saw that my sense of self was subject to massive, quick shifts which were polar opposite in nature (e.g. I am bad mum, a good mum; I am anxious, I am OK). Once I saw that it was purely my thinking about myself that created my sense of self and that this was open to fluctuations, I saw that none of it could be true. That my true self wasn’t what I believed about myself. My true self is before all the thought I experience about myself. ⠀

My true self is innately well, whole and loving. Trying to fix that which is changing and impermanent (my thoughts and beliefs about myself) just doesn’t make sense to me anymore. Looking towards that which doesn’t change, and is permanent, now seems the most common sense, and liberating thing to do. Paradoxically, this allows us to embrace all it means to be human, to be OK with the human-ness of our experience. ⠀

I’m going to say something potentially controversial, but also potentially liberating. ⠀

What if what you think, the thoughts that pass through your mind don’t belong to you? ⠀

I think most of us would agree that we humans are more than the body we inhabit; that there is something larger than ourselves at play here in our lives. We aren’t responsible for making our hearts beat, our lungs breathe, our legs walk. The life-force within us takes care of this. ⠀
⠀
So why do we get so caught up in believing every thought that runs through our minds, and beat ourselves up when we are thinking negatively? What if the same energy that beats our hearts, activates our immune system, grows trees is the same energy that gives us the experience of thinking? ⠀
⠀
I have come to see that we are the 'awareness' or 'witness' to what is occurring in our lives, and that includes our thinking. There are lots of thoughts that I wouldn’t choose to think. And I bet the same is true for you. So if I don’t want to be thinking certain thoughts, why can’t I stop them? Because we have no control over them, it’s simply energy flowing. Therefore we can let them pass on through, like the weather passing through the sky. ⠀

Whilst we can consciously move our attention to think a specific thought, it doesn’t last long before another thought pops into our head….give it a try and see if for one or two minutes you can think one single thought. Hard eh!⠀

We aren’t doing the thinking, it is being done through us. It’s a much less personal process that we believe it is. Our true self, our larger self is before thought. ⠀
The more we can see this, the more we can relax with what thoughts are occurring through us. And we get the opportunity to be more at peace and present with the life that is flowing through us. We don’t have to take our thinking so seriously or take it as truth. ⠀

Inspire 2019 is now complete and I am sitting here today in beautiful, emotional reflection and gratitude for what has been a simply extraordinary few days.

I always knew doing this event with Barb @barb_p was going to be special but this truly exceeded anything I could have wished for. What an honour and a privilege this was, on so many levels.
.
Such a wonderful group of people coming together to explore, share stories and dive deeper into this understanding of our beautiful, messy, vibrant human experience.
.
While outside the wind howled and the rain lashed, inside the conversation gently wove its magic through each and every person present.
.
Together we leaned in, listening, sharing, laughing, releasing. Beautifully ordinary insights in the moment. Again and again and again.
.
Watching this community grow so organically, observing those ripples of impact gently shimmer their way outwards and reaching more people, is quite honestly a long-held dream come true.

Thank you to every single person who came and collaborated. Thank you for contributing to that divine collective creation, Barb and I are full up to the brim.
