With all.that was going with my family didn't get to acknowledge the anniversary of the 2010 Haiti earthquake yesterday.

Reposted from @jolivert - The Constant Gardener came out when I first left Haiti in 2005. It was the same year Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans (A city I worked in, not knowing what it would prepare me for). This movie gave me so much perspective on how meaningless people of color seem to be in the world.
.
It’s been 9 years ago today since a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti and shun light on the mishaps of international aid. .
I always say that Haiti is like a black neighborhood of the US (I long ago set aside our myth of freedom).
.
It also is the poor country of this hemisphere that helps move some international conversations forward: you need to have a poor-country-story, a place in constant war, a place with drug issues, etc. etc. [Just enough to ask for a wall]
.
All those conversations can make one look ‘worldly’ and knowledgeable on a dinner table. Maybe one will also ‘just’ hop on a plane and fix that poor country with an article they write after spending a week in ‘total mayhem’
.
They will fall in love with the (fame) country and build a career with published books that secondary school students from those countries could have written if they had access to better education. (Amongst other career paths)
.
Please stop “meaning well”. #internationalhistoryofhaiti #theworldfascinatesme - #regrann
