Reason to go local #25 : Save the Oceans! 🐙🦀🐡🐠🐬🐳
Being in the prairies with a border of towering mountains between us and our closest ocean, it can be easy to forget about the potential impacts we may have on these massive bodies of water. We urge you not to forget however, because even the products you choose to consume and dispose of here, can make a wave. Agricultural run-off contributes to dead zones in our local bodies of water, and ultimately the ocean when it makes its way there. Packaging waste often ends up in the ocean as we ship our garbage and recycling across the world. Seafood is often caught with destructive methods, or farmed unsustainably. Look beyond your home, your community, your province, and see the impact your choices have on the world outside of you.
3 ways to ‘save the oceans’ at market:
1. Choose products with minimal packaging/ask for alternative options. Some vendors offer refills or BYOpackages like @five21roasters and @thegardenerdsyyc
2. Shop seafood at @dorbelfinefoods and ask them about their @oceanwiselife products
3. Sort your refuse into the proper bins. We have landfill, compost and recycling bins at market each week. Before chucking your dinner plate, make sure you’re putting it into the right bin. Proper sorting means our facilities have an easier time managing our trash.
