Part 2. Continuing from last week.... The issue with “detoxing” is further highlighted by the inability of the companies selling “detox” products to be able to define exactly what the toxins are that they are meant to be helping. We are all surrounded by organisms from bacteria to fungi and come into contact with chemicals that have the potential to do harm on a daily basis. But again, most of us are lucky enough to have a functioning immune system and natural defenses to deal with, disable and process those foreign bodies so that they do no harm. This all happens without us even needing to think about it. But people do report feeling better when they have been on a “detox” diet. So what is going on? The benefits that people feel are often simply because they exclude foods and drink that are not healthy for them anyway, or may have been having in excess for a period of time. Detoxing normally incorporates eliminating processed food, alcohol and caffeine, drinking more water along with generally being more active. Therefore, the benefits one might feel are not necessarily due to you detoxing more but the fact that you are implementing lifestyle changes that are conducive to better health anyway. . . . . First time I’ve ever done 17 days straight of sports and deep tissue massages. I don’t know how any other therapists manage themselves, I just know I won’t be doing that again! Combined with wrist/hand stretches, I’ve applied kinesio tape to help release the compressed tension on my palm which I’m concerned about getting carpal tunnel syndrome. BUT, whilst you’ve been kicking back over the festive season, chances are things have tightened and become pretty sore 😑 The glutes being a very common area! - The fix? Stretch, self release & strengthen!💪 So, here are our 3 gems to prevent them peaches from tightening and becoming painful when getting back into the swing of your training routine: - 1️⃣ Self glute release with a massage ball: roll up, down and all around! 2️⃣ Piriformis glute stretch on a chair/bench: bend your stance knee to intensify the stretch. 3️⃣ Fire hydrants with a loop band: at a 45 degree angle and also behind the body. - Tag your mum, dad, bro, sis, friends or whoever! A patient of mine complained of various pains but the one the bothered him most was on the right side of his neck that referred to around the superior and medial part of his scapula. He is a plasterer and is right-hand dominant. On observation he displayed an elevated shoulder on that side (it is not uncommon to have a dropped shoulder on that side with a condition like this where there may be a neurological interference and the muscles elevating the shoulder are partially ‘switched off’). His left rotation was limited and through testing his C1 was primarily responsible for this. It was very tender on the transverse processes of C1-C4 and around his occiput (back of head). Right side flexion and right rotation caused aggravation. The info gathered suggested a dysfunctional levator scapula and/or the semispinalis capitis which were hypertonic. Neurological tests were clear. It seemed he had a dysfunction of his C1-C4 left rotation due to said muscles being hypertonic. This wasn’t a particularly confusing diagnosis as in the case where the pain was, the problem seemed to be. Treatment consisted of releasing is right levator scapula and semispinalis capitis and reducing rounded shoulder posture to take tension off of these muscles. After they were released I mobilised C1-C4 left rotation and used traction. Providing you have your motion back at the shoulder & you’ve been working on your personal rehab, this is a great little introductory exercise getting you going through the passive range whilst part hanging on the bar. Keep feet on the ground or a step whilst you transition forward and back to create flexion extension at the shoulder. Easy progressions and regressions can be made here, but begin with this. Mix up the width of your grip for variation. Keep pain free and slowly add intensity to the motion by increasing speed or taking more weight in the shoulders. Have fun! 💥🔥

The rhomboid muscles are in fact 2 muscles (minor and major) often grouped due to their functional similarity.  Unsurprisingly these muscles are rhombus-shaped, and are chiefly responsible for the retraction of the scapula. When the rhomboid muscles contract the two shoulder blades are pulled together, for this reason they play a vital role in posture and maintainance of a healthy back. . 🌟Origin: nuchal ligaments, spinous process of the C7-T5 vertebrae . 🌟Insertion: medial border of the scapula . 🌟Innovation: Dorsal scapular nerve . Exercises to strengthen this muscle include; the cable row, bent over row, resistance band scapula retraction, and single arm dumbell row. This along with practicing good posture daily will maintain good back health. Some common issues surrounding the use of this muscle include; sprain, strain and spasm. This is where I am different...I will make sure every patient has; A. Completed the full rehabilitation process B. Stressed and tested the affected area fully before return to activity/discharging Why? Because the extra work short term will lead to less work long term!! 👌💪

In addition, it seems that there are no apparent adverse effects in exercising into pain when the aim is to manage musculoskeletal pain. A couple of nights ago I was asked to run a workshop with some students that we have at Warriors about being self employed. In doing my planning and research for it and seeing it all in black and white it really highlighted to me how fortunate I am to have built my own little business. I have worked for myself for 12 years and although it can be very challenging, stressful and at times pretty daunting it is also the most rewarding thing in the world to see my vision grow and to see my amazing clients buy in to what I have created and reap the benefits of it! I am so blessed to do a job I love with such wonderful support along the way. It also makes me proud to set an example to my daughter about what you can achieve with hard work, commitment and determination. It’s always a work in progress and there are some big things coming this year but just occasionally it’s nice to stand back and feel pride for what you have created. #sportstherapy #selfemployment #liveyourdream

As a follow up to my previous post about the trap muscle and myofascial treatment I wanted to show how you can self-release the trap! This muscle has 3 functional parts: . ▪️Descending (or superior) part: runs from the occipital bone and nuchal ligament to the lateral third of the clavicle. ▪️Transverse (or middle) part: originates from the spinal processes of the first to fourth thoracic vertebrae and inserts at the acromion. . ▪️Ascending (or inferior) part: extends from the spinal processes of the fifth to twelfth thoracic vertebrae to the scapular spine. . Take a @BLACKROLL® BALL 08, Lacrosse ball, ⚾️ or 🎾. Place it on the muscle and try the release exercises which you can see in the picture: 1️⃣Ascending and transverse part 2️⃣Descending part . Roll slowly among the muscle, trying to identify areas of tightness or discomfort. Pause on these areas for several seconds and the tightness should begin to ease. Ensuring you roll from the origin to the insertion is a good way to target 🎯the entire length of the muscle. . Releasing some of this tissue can directly affect and relieve your headache without the use of any medicine! . ⚡️Upper Body Nerve Pain ⚡️ The strongest and most fit of us can have crazy types of pain. ⚡️ Sometimes there is a traumatic injury that occurs. Other times the pain comes out of nowhere. ⚡️ No matter how pain begins it is important to identify it’s triggers and what we may doing in our daily lives to keep it around. ⚡️ The body is amazing at reorganizing, restructuring and changing what we feel and experience. But it often starts with just moving, getting stronger and letting go of fear. WE ARE HIGHLY RESILIENT AND CAPABLE 💯 ⚡️ This is a simple exercise program you can begin if you are having pain/numbness/tingling in you arms & hands. It works every muscle group & glides every nerve through the tissue in the upper extremity. Keep your load LIGHT to begin with and make sure your movements are slow and controlled. Start with 3 sets of 10. Increase your resistance if that 10rep feels easy. Make sure to control your breathing and keep tension out of your body. If the weight causes tension DROP IT LIKE IT’s HOT 🔥. ⚡️ This buff guy here is used to working out at the #GYM often and lifting high loads. I had to reel him in and teach him some SIMPLE things & he is now pain free and sleeping well. We are also working on these same principles on the Pilates Reformer. 🍑 Glute Strengthening 🍑 - Here are 3 ways to target the glutes to prevent “dynamic knee valgus” (knee caving in as it bends) and really improve lower limb stability - 1️⃣ Single leg squats with valgus force: The band pulling inwards creates a valgus force, which increases the demand on the glutes to provide pelvic stability - 2️⃣ Hip Hikes: With the knee staying relatively straight, we focus on controlling the movement only at the pelvis. Drop the hip slowly, use as little hand assistance as you can to force your glutes and pelvic stabilizers to really work - 3️⃣ Reverse lunge with valgus force: Similar concept as we saw with the single leg squat, except with achieve increased knee flexion to really challenge the stabilizers are greater depths - Give these a try as these and really jumpstart that glute activity! - 🗣 Would love to hear what you think!
