HOW MUCH CARDIO?!

Cardio gets a lot of hate when it comes to fat loss. And for good reason – it's hard & often boring AF. Whilst cardio shouldn’t be your main focus for body composition goals, it is best used as your ace in the hole once you've dialed in your resistance training and diet.

With my clients I use a combination of high-intensity intervals (HIIT), long-intensity intervals (LI) & metabolic conditioning (metcon)  High-intensity intervals very time-efficient & can be incredible for jumpstarting fat loss, long intervals help build general aerobic capacity & metabolic conditioning is a great way to burn a heap of calories in a more playful, entertaining way. On the other side of the spectrum, low intensity cardio like cycling or walking also will provide a ton of benefits with next to no recovery required. .

Just as with resistance training, cardio needs to be thoughtfully periodised. Here's an example of what your cardio volume progression might look like: (If incorporating HIIT or metcon, reduce the session time by 25%)

Weeks 1 and 2 – 60 total min
(1 x 60 min or 2 x 30 min or 3 x 20 min)

Weeks 3 and 4 – 90 total min
(2 x 45 min or 3 x 30 min or 4 x 22.5 min)

Week 5 and 6 – 120 total min
(2 x 60 min or 3 x 40 min or 4 x 30 min)

The split between the different types of cardio I would taylor specifically to the individual’s personal preference & would coincide with their resistance training volume & recovery requirements.

🏋🏼‍♂️ Exercise: EZ Bar Preacher Curl
.
💪🏽 Muscles: Targets primarily both heads of the Bicep & also works the forearm.
.
🔬 Explained: The EZ Bar preacher curl is a great exercise for biceps as it allows the biceps to contract at an angle adding more tension. The EZ curl bar also allows the forearms to become slightly more involved than a regular bar does because of the angle. The Ez curl is a straight forward exercise as it is a simple flexion of the elbow. This exercise should be used during every arm/bicep workout as it targets the entire bicep & is a really enjoyable movement. Use a weight you can handle and perfect form as this is a vital part of building muscle on the biceps. This exercise is also perfect for a beginner as there is nothing difficult about it. So give it a try.

🔎 Tips:
* Sitting down at preacher holding EZ curl bar in both hands with arms fully extended on front.
*Flex elbows so weight moves towards shoulder and squeeze.
*During this movement keep elbows on preacher.
*After flexion make sure to extend arms fully at the end of the movement, so there is a full range of motion.
