The study, led by the University of Sheffield and published today in the journal Nature, reveals the structure of cytochrome b6f -- the protein complex that significantly influences plant growth via photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is the foundation of life on Earth providing the food, oxygen and energy that sustains the biosphere and human civilisation.
Using a high-resolution structural model, the team found that the protein complex provides the electrical connection between the two light-powered chlorophyll-proteins (Photosystems I and II) found in the plant cell chloroplast that convert sunlight into chemical energy.
Lorna Malone, the first author of the study and a PhD student in the University of Sheffield's Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, said: "Our study provides important new insights into how cytochrome b6f utilises the electrical current passing through it to power up a 'proton battery'. This stored energy can then be then used to make ATP, the energy currency of living cells. Ultimately this reaction provides the energy that plants need to turn carbon dioxide into the carbohydrates and biomass that sustain the global food chain."
The high-resolution structural model, determined using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, reveals new details of the additional role of cytochrome b6f as a sensor to tune photosynthetic efficiency in response to ever-changing environmental conditions. This response mechanism protects the plant from damage during exposure to harsh conditions such as drought or excess light.

❗️Tutorial Thursday #7❗️
This time I want to show a REALLY helpful tip for all Ableton users. You probably know the problem that you sketch out an idea and you used a sample throughout your whole song which you wanna change. Instead of replacing every single sample you can just hot swap them with this easy trick 🤓🙌🏼
I hope you find this helpful and can use it in your next productions 🙏🏼

My selection for Day 9 of #10albumsin10days is "Dots and Loops" by Stereolab. This group was the poster child for Alternative music, as it is really difficult to put them in a neat little genre, but their music could be best described as a combination of lounge music, art pop, indie electronic, experimental rock and drew influences from jazz, funk and Brazilian music. One thing that stood out is that it music was always mixed and mastered to perfection. Every instrument between the organs, keyboards/synthesizers, bass, drums guitars, vibraphone, all sat PERFECTLY in the mix and had room to breathe. It was almost like experiencing music in 3D. While Laetitia Sadier isn't a technically "great" vocalist, she has a unique, calm, soothing voice that was used very well within her vocal range, and it basically served as another instrument that really took the music to another level. On top of it, most of the lyrics are in French (FYI I don't speak a word of French, my 7th grade French classes notwithstanding lol), clearly having the ability to break past the language barrier is a credit to how awesome the music is. The melodies throughout this album are simple but complex, and as mentioned the mixes are so clean and smooth. "Miss Modular" "A Flower Called Nowhere" "Diagonals" "Prisoner of Mars" and "Rainbo Conversation" are my favorites here. Even if you've never heard of Stereolab before, chances are you've heard something they were associated with in some way or another. For example: J Dilla sampled a Stereolab song for Busta Rhymes' "Show Me What You Got" and Common had Laetitia Sadier featured on "A New Wave" off the Electric Circus album. So yeah, I had a lot to say about this one (understatement, yes indeed 😂), but this is one of those albums that I just can't shut up about and for good reason! ✌🏾 #Stereolab#London#artpop#UK#downtempo#electronicmusic#Samples#breakbeats#experimentalmusic#rhymes#indie#psychrock#indieelectronic#DJing#vinyladay#drumbreaks#vinyl#90s#choppingsamples#beats#Queens#nyc#drums#bass#production#producerlife#theartofsampling#loops#beats#nowplaying
