According to National Geographic, 91% of plastic isn’t recycled. 😭One of the best options moving forward is to adopt - or attempt to adopt a #zerowaste lifestyle that reduces the amount of recyclable materials people use.
.
Start with some easy steps below 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
1. Always carry a reusable water bottle and a reusable straw with you
2.bring cloth totes to the supermarket (not plastic bag) and use reusable produce bag
3. Use bar soap ( rather than liquid)

Nine years ago this fall I went in for a routine mole check and found out a few days later that the sketchy mole was melanoma. Since then I’ve had a number of basal cell carcinoma removed and a bunch of precancerous spots. It’s not really a matter of if I’ll have more cancerous spots, it’s just when and how early we’ll catch them. All of this was completely preventable, but we just had no idea when I was a kid of the danger of bad sunburns and tanning beds.
This is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about what I do: because if I can get someone to use good sub protection on themselves and their kids, they might never have to deal with this. One of the biggest barriers is something so simple as ease of application and it’s one of the things that made me fall in love with beautycounter because the sunscreen is super easy to apply and doesn’t leave that weird 👻-like glow mist mineral sunscreens peace.
Another reason I’m so passionate: two weeks ago the FDA published research showing chemical sunscreens enter the bloodstream. The FDA called on the manufacturers of that sunscreen to perform more research before the ingredients in those sunscreens can be recognized as safe. But until then, those sunscreens that was e don’t yet have enough info to know if their safe make up the bulk of sunscreens on store shelves (even in the “clean” section of Sephora because #greenwashing). Read that again, please. How is this okay??? This is valuing profit over people’s health and we are doing everything we can to change the laws so consumers have the protections they deserve.
What you can do until those laws are passed: like, share, or comment on this post so more people see it? Everyone needs to know this and the vast majority of Americans don’t! Vote with your dollars! Take advantage of the beautycounter Memorial Day dale that started today where every purchase over $125 gets you a sunscreen lotion and a sunscreen mist! And message me if you have sunscreen questions!! This is something where our buying power can reshape the whole market — let’s use it!
⭐️ FAVA BEANS ⭐️⁣
⁣⁣⁣
DID YOU KNOW? Fava beans are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. They’re thought to offer impressive health effects, such as improved motor function and immunity.⁣
⁣
✔️Fava beans are incredibly nutritious and an excellent source of soluble fiber, protein, folate, manganese, copper and several other micronutrients.⁣
✔️They’re rich in L-dopa, which your body converts to dopamine.⁣
✔️Fava beans are loaded with folate, a nutrient that promotes proper brain and spinal cord development in infants. Adequate folate intake in pregnant women can help prevent neural tube defects.⁣
✔️ Studies have shown that they contain compounds that have been shown to boost antioxidant activity of human cells. ✔️Regular consumption of fava beans may help increase blood iron levels and improve symptoms of anemia that results from inadequate iron intake.
A friendly reminder from @beciorpin that we can still make a positive impact.
Last year the cocktail festival was the first festival to join our campaign and get rid of plastic straws. This year they have gone even further and are using reusable glasses too. .
We will be there partying the night away with them so why not join us. We’re honoured to be linked to them again. .
.
No ad in this just chuffed they’ve gone a step further and want others to follow suit. .

🙅🏻‍♀️Let me start by saying that plastic should be avoided. Period. However, it is not always possible to avoid 100% so let’s get 🤓educated on what these signs mean...
.
.
These signs were originally designed to identify the type of plastic used so we know which ones can be recycled and reused (eg 1,2,4,5) .
.
However, I’ve lumped them by potential toxicity. Avoid those on the right... ones on the left are ‘safer’ but doesn’t mean they are 100% safe. .
.
☠️Plastics can leach chemicals, particularly if exposed to sun, heat, repeated use, abrasives; some are better than others.
.
.
👩‍🔬Here are some common uses of these by the number you see inside the triangle:
.
.
1- (this is usually deemed safe but because arsenic is used in manufacturing, I put it on the right hand side) - soft drinks, water bottle, nut butter jars. These are single use so recycle them but do not re-use them. .
.
2-milk jugs, juice and detergent bottles. Considered the safest, and most stable (ie less breakdown) .
.
3-Cling film, food wrap, PVC pipe, teething rings and toys 🤬 - major source of phthalates, avoid
.
4-Frozen food bags, squeezable bottles, Cling film - consider replacing ziplocks with silicone bags like @stasherbag or fabric bags (make sure the coating is food safe eg @lunchskins ) .
.
5-reuseable microwaveable ware, kitchen ware, disposable plates and cups- more heat resistant than others so considered safer
.
.
6-styrofoam cups, plates, disposable take away boxes - avoid this completely
.
.
7-beverage bottles, baby milk bottles, electronic casing - avoid completely .
.
.
It takes intention and a bit of getting used to, to reduce plastic use, but it is possible eg in my bag I usually have an empty thermos/glass cup, a foldable fabric bag, and a water bottle. .
.
🤓Be mindful and do what you can 💪⭐️

These are the 2 purses that I use⁣.
⁣
➊ The smaller one is basically a wallet. It just hold my cards and phone. I’ve had it for forever and it’s honestly falling apart but I don’t want to get rid of it yet...⁣
⁣
➋ I use the bigger one to transport my laptop when I go to work off of free WiFi, or to sneak snacks into the movies ¯\_(ツ)_/¯⁣
⁣
✨ On another note:⁣
⁣
I’ve been thinking about getting a phone case that’s also a wallet so I don’t have to carry a purse, what do you guys think?⁣
⁣
I’ve found one shop on Etsy that makes vegan leather wallet phone cases that look pretty cool⁣
⁣
I also found a brand that make 100% compostable phone cases BUT they’re not wallet cases! 😩⁣
⁣
So what should I do?⁣
💀 Get the wallet phone case from Etsy⁣
🖤 Get the compostable phone case even though it’s not a wallet⁣
🌙 Nothing, just keep using what you have Emily. Jeez. ⁣
⁣
Hahahah let me know friendssss 😸

Americans throw out 38 billion (with a “B”) plastic water bottles EACH YEAR. Only 23% of plastic bottles are recycled in the US, whereas 67% of aluminum cans and bottles are. So I was SOOO happy to be served @drinkopenwater in a metal bottle rather than plastic while on a business trip! When will this be in Seattle?? 💦 ♻️ .

🐢 Here’s a green #turtle entangled in a plastic net. THIS is the impact that abandoned fishing nets have on marine life. (Actually it gets much worse.)
⠀⠀
🎣 If commercial fishermen can’t fish responsibly, then why allow them to even fish at all? #zerowasteglobe

More people need to understand why it’s important to eliminate marine plastic pollution so that they can take positive and significant action towards reducing it.

#SpringCleaning tip:

Brighten your whites the natural way!

You don’t need harsh chemicals or special detergents to brighten those greyish-looking bed sheets:
.
☆ soak them overnight in a bucket with water and ½ cup of sodium percarbonate (available in bulk at the store or NUOnline)
☆ run them through the washer
☆ let them air dry in the sun for some additional sun bleaching!

It works, and nothing beats the smell of fresh laundry that’s been hanging outside to dry! ☉🌸
I often hear people question whether reusable cups are in fact better for the environment than disposable cups since they use much more energy to produce and require washing. Well a lot of studies have been conducted to work this out.....
.
It's been proven that a reusable coffee cup (glass is best) needs AS LITTLE AS 6 uses to offset its energy / footprint on the environment. 🌿That's not many reuses at all! 🌿Imagine the benefits switching to a reusable cup every day for many years can have!
.
Out of all the plastic free switches, this for me has to be the easiest. Have you made the switch today?

🤓 ⁣(adj.) non·con·sen·su·al // not agreed to by one or more of the people involved⠀
⏤⁣⠀
🍟 When you order chicken fingers and fries for the 347th time, it's essentially an agreement between you and your server. 🤝 Your server agrees to get you your chicken fingers and fries and you agree that you'll eat those chicken fingers and fries... and that you'll pay for them. 🤔 When you go out to eat, almost everything is agreed upon by everyone involved, which is the definition of consensual. Think about it. ⠀
⏤⁣⠀
☝ But we say "almost everything" because there's one thing we can think of that's not agreed to by everyone involved: The automatic serving of plastic straws. 😕 Sure, you could opt-out and request no straw with your drink, but this is a relatively new (and odd) request when you consider years of customers requesting to have things versus to ~not~ have things. ⠀
⏤⁣⠀
👏 That's why cafes and restaurants should adopt a Straws-On-Request policy (or Opt-In System) and take charge of their businesses procedures from the top down. 🙋 With an opt-in system, the customer would request a straw with their drink, just like they would request their meal, their split-check, and extra sauce. ⠀
⏤⁣⠀
💪 But it's also on us to ask for this kind of change from our local businesses, so TAG a cafe or restaurant that you think should adopt this policy! ⠀

These soaps make our hearts happy. They were made with love and they are so beautiful. The ingredients are so simple and the final product is so perfectly composed. These soaps have purpose whether it’s to help inflamed skin or heal your aching body. They are a limited run so come pick them up before they’re gone! We also have unscented options!
Sometimes it’s nice to just look around and appreciate the simplicity of glass and wood. Knowing that their final destination will be transformation back into soil and sand is somehow comforting. Not to mention that these bottles will be filled up with on-tap kombucha before that. That’s also comforting. 😘
Reposted from @savethereef - We love these before and after photos by @haram_khor_ featuring @aishwaryasharmaa_ but people ask us if we want to truly want to SaveTheReef, why even feature plastic pollution at all? Well, for one, we want to save the oceans, marine life and the reef and to do that we need to change our ways and prioritize the environment MUCH MORE…ending plastic pollution is a big part of that process. But more to the point, marine scientists have recently discovered that plastic pollution IS killing coral reefs as a new study based on four years of diving on 159 reefs in the Pacific shows that reefs in four countries — Australia, Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar — are heavily contaminated with plastic. It clings to the coral, especially branching coral. And where it clings, it sickens or kills. "The likelihood of disease increases from 4 percent to 89 percent when corals are in contact with plastic," researchers report in the journal Science. Coral reefs already are experiencing record amounts of bleaching due to unusually warm water, either from seasonal shifts in water temperature or from human-caused global warming and ”bleached coral is more susceptible to disease since it’s stressed so plastic makes things that much worse." Researchers say they found that corals within yards of each other showed a noticeable difference: Those with plastic were much more likely to be diseased. So, please do pick up plastic and trash whenever you see it and stay tuned for our upcoming documentary that explains all of these issues in much greater detail. And please share posts like this to help us spread awareness about this problem as far too few people know how urgent the situation is becoming! #saveourseas #plasticsucks #karmagawa #savethereef - #regrann
Today I finally put fresh clothes on (3 days in bed with the same pj’s 😬) and headed to the store. We had no food due to me and my neck spasm. I’ve been shopping at @wincofoods for at least 20 years now. Excited about their huge bulk section and super low prices. Super happy when a employee told me I could use my own fabric bags. That was a few years ago. Since then anytime I use a fabric bag I make sure to wash them before I use them again. Until today 😡 A employee told me I can’t use my fabric bags in the bulk section. I nicely told her that’s a first I’ve heard of that rule. Then asked when did this happen. She snapped back at me and said “forever”. To my reply “I’ve been shopping here for years and nobody has said anything. Her reply “I’ve never seen you here”. 😡😡. She suggested the plastic bags and how I can return them to be recycled. She was using a very rude tone with me so I just walked away. After paying for my groceries I walked over to customer service to know exactly what the rules are and that I didn’t appreciate the snarky tone of the employee. So it’s true. They don’t allow anyone to bring their own bags to the bulk section. I’m happy I found out the actual rules but super frustrated on how I found out. So @wincofoods maybe you need to have a meeting and have all employees on the same page. And until this rule is changed I WONT BE BUYING BULK at Winco anymore. I am not alone in this fight against plastic. Things need to change. So now I need to start a new shopping plan and look for a new store who WILL let me use fabric bags for bulk. #plasticsucks
I like the Bulk Barn but I'm finding
I use too many plastic bags so out came my mother's sewing machine. Made a few cotton bags for dry stuff. My little part in a better planet👍
