Above are some sunscreens that are used at the Au household pretty much daily. As you can see, we’re serious about sunscreen. 😋 And while most of us have been taught to slather on the sunscreen for decades, there is some debate and confusion over how much sunscreen we should really be using.
Most doctors and dermatologists recommend applying about a shot glass worth of sunscreen for your entire body, and about a nickel size for your face. They also recommend reapplying every two hours or so. Expect to reapply even more if you are swimming or sweating heavily.
Choosing the right SPF can be tricky. While it seems like the highest numbers would be the best, actually there is some debate about the usefulness of high SPFs. Your skin color will also determine how much sunscreen and what SPF is right for you.
Some scientists and doctors are actually recommending that we limit our sunscreen use due to increasing rates of Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is an essential vitamin and is linked to cancer prevention. With rampant sunscreen use or sun avoidance, many people fail to get the Vitamin D that their bodies need. There is speculation that this could be increasing the likelihood of other types of cancer and health issues.

We’re so used to slathering on sunscreen that it’s easy to forget the other effective ways to block the sun’s rays. Opt for protective clothing, broad-brimmed hats, sun umbrellas, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

So, what’s the verdict on sunscreen? Well, it really depends on your skin type, quality, and lifestyle. Come in for a custom skin consult to get Lydia’s expert advice and the perfect skin protection plan for you.
