Sirita Jimmina Sotelo was born on February 12th 2000. Sirita was a sweet, energetic, and loving little girl. She loved to sing and dance, and loved to look at the night sky. She could always point out Mars in the sky. Her favorite color was pink. Sirita was born with cocaine in her system and she was the result of an affair. Sirita's mother was not able to overcome her drug use and she also had psychological problems. On May 15th 2004, based on the the amount of times that Sirita had been in the care of the state and the failed attempts to place her back with her mother the state filed papers to try to terminate the parental rights of her mother, Patricia Sotelo. Throughout her short life, Sirita lived in eight different foster homes. When CPS was seeking to terminate the mother's parental rights, Sirita's father requested that she be placed with him and his wife, and won. In November 2004, Sirita began to live with her father, stepmother and four other children. On January 22nd 2005, CPS received a referral from law enforcement reporting Sirita's suspicious death the previous day. At the time that she passed away, Sirita had been in the care of her stepmother, and another relative. The relative called 911 after finding Sirita dead. Sirita appeared gaunt, malnourished, and pale. Sirita's stepmother later admitted that she couldn't handle Sirita's "fits" and tantrums, and that she had beaten Sirita and thrown her in a cold shower after she wet her pants. A medical examiner determined that her death was caused by blows to her head which had caused her skull to fracture and she also had a severed liver. The stepmother was later sentenced to just 8 years in prison. She was released in 2013.
