After many accumulated overtime hours, I’ve finally managed to go on a few hikes, gone kayaking in resurrection bay, and spent time with new friends over crackling bonfires.
It’s hard not to become a transient sleeper here, stealing any and all moments that you can in this beautiful state, finding time to sleep when you can between shifts and during the short dark hours.
After hiking up slaughter ridge in mainly moody and overcast skies about a week ago, I ended up having an evening off and around 830pm the skies started clearing and I decided to go up again in search of golden light and turquoise water. I’ve quickly learned that the hiking in Alaska often consists of short but very steep hikes to above tree line and this hike follows that same pattern, climbing 2600’ in just 2 miles. Being just two miles down the road from our lodge, I know I’ll grow very familiar with the steep slope, small wooded areas, and rocky ridge that lead to the top. Right now, small purple and blue flowers dot the scene and the trees are only just getting ready to unfurl their leaves and I look forward to the unfolding of summer. 🌿
