INTUITIVE EATING VERSUS DIETING: IS THERE A MIDDLE GROUND?
Just like everything in life, there will always be extremes, black and white. When it comes to nutrition and our food choices, this trend of extremism is also present, and I believe that both extremes are hurting people. In the world of nutrition, the two extremes that you see are:
* intuitive eating
* dieting/calorie counting
The goal of #intuitiveeating is never weight loss, and desire to change your body is often criticized. The mottos “listen to your body” and “no foods are bad” are resounding themes within the intuitive eating community. There are never #foodrules Calorie and #macro counting are from the devil himself.
Then we have #dietculture and the typical calories in vs calories out mindset. This community believes that its all about the calories, the less you eat and the more you exercise, the better! Foods are labeled as “good” and “bad,” and this type of messaging often instills fear and guilt around food. Concepts like #cheatday and “falling off the wagon” are common within diet culture. This has ruined so many women, instilling a poor relationship with not only food but our bodies.
Surely there has got to be a middle ground. Well, like most things in life, there are several shades of gray. With the topic of food and nutrition, it is never #blackandwhite We cannot simply base our food decisions solely on “what our body is telling us to eat.” Our bodies don’t always do the best job guiding us! There is a place for counting calories/macros and it doesn’t have to be about #weightloss Most women are #undereating and it takes them counting their calories to realize they need #morefood Knowledge about what a person is putting into their body is powerful!
And there is absolutely nothing wrong or shameful about wanting to change your body. By acknowledging “I want to lose weight,” or “I want to gain muscle,” you are not shaming your body or embracing self-hatred. You are actually LOVING your body for wanting to prioritize your health!
There is a place for ice cream #hallelujah and it shouldn’t require you to workout to #earnthecalories
