I heard this tune at a Lutheran confirmation ceremony in Norway, in the church my ancestors were baptized in. I was filming Episode 4 of Alt for Norge, Season 10 (Norwegian reality adventure show). The entire episode took place in Dovre Kommune, the area my ancestors came from. I was honored to be invited up during the ceremony to read the 23rd Psalm- mainly tried not to burst in to tears during that part. 😹😍Earlier that day, I had been taken to Fokstugu, a 1,000 year old farmstead and inn on an ancient pilgrimage route, where my ancestors had lived and worked for generations. While there, I opened a letter with information about my ancestors and living relatives in Norway. It was one of the most profound, moving, and special days of my life. I've never felt so connected to a place I’d just set foot on.
After the confirmation service, I borrowed a fellow contestant’s camera, ran back inside the church, and grabbed a photo of this hymn from the Salmebok (hymnal). When I came home to the states, I started working on my own version. I am so thrilled to have been able to record this beautiful, haunting song with my friend and producer Jon Dryden.
I did get pretty confused with the Norwegian dialect on this one.😆I’m sorry!! I’ll get better.
Huge thank you to the people of the Dovre Church, Ivar and his family from Toftemo, the people at Fokstugu, and the cast/crew and production team of Alt for Norge for this special day I will cherish for the rest of my life.
