Opening reception is today, 27 June at #galerieagathegaillard in Paris and some of my prints will be exhibited at 'La Passeggiata’ including this image. I wish I could be there too…. (BTW this image will be a label of beautiful orange wine which was made by my lovely friends #graubaume from Portugal) I will be in Paris on this Sunday, then to Arles, with my new artist books ’so it goes’ which are still on their way… well, but I almost finished printing all and am confident that they will be ready on time.
The Pencil of the Sun: New Edition Photographs
Published by Akaaka-sha
Shomei Tomatsu's The Pencil of the Sun: New Edition Photographs brings together a collection of previously presented and unpublished images from the original 1975 publication as well as photographs from Shomei Tomatsu's later body of work. Originally published by Mainichi Newspapers; this new edition, brought together by Akaaka Art Publishers, makes available the iconic photobook as a two book set publication encased within a slipcase. Accordingly titled The Pencil of the Sun 1975 and The Pencil of the Sun 2015, the first includes work published within the original 1975 publication presented as a newly designed photobook, accompanied by Shomei Tomatsu's original 1975 published text. The second photobook brings together work taken after 1975 edited and put together by Art Historian and Professor Toshiharu Ito and Cultural Anthropologist Ryuta Imafuku. Included within are a collection of unpublished images caputured after 1975 and essays by both of the editors. This new publication is a welcome addition to the critical collection of published works by Shomei Tomatsu, allowing viewers to once again engage and encounter Tomatsu's visual reality; a narrative which captured Japan's post-war experiences as a society and a message that remains as relevant and contemporary within Japan's current social and political climate.
This new edition of Tomatsu's The Pencil of the Sun 1975 includes all of the originally published photographs apart from two images.
All text within the publication only avaiable in Japanese.
