What. A. Night.
I've been having a bit of a rough week so tonight I decided at the last minute to get out of the house and go solo to see Lee 'Scratch' Perry perform for the first time.
I first learned about #LeeScratchPerry through the #BeastieBoys track: Dr. Lee PHD back in the late 90's. I had also been told that he's an interesting character who would occasionally blow the smoke from his spliff into the mic so that it would have its place in the music. :) Over the years I listened to some of his albums and did some reading, and started to realize just how prolific of an artist he is. He's been active since 1958, is one of the pioneers of Dub Music, and is also one of the very first artists to remix existing tracks. He has released over 50 albums personally, has produced a number of hit singles for the legendary #StudioOne, worked with #BobMarley and The Wailers, #JuniorMurvin, #TheHeptones, and #TheClash among many others. He is a Grammy award winner, and is also on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of top 100 artists of all time. So it was an absolute honor to have the man randomly invite me backstage to his dressing room to say hello in a quieter setting and to sign an album for me. Incredible.
Here are a couple of quotes that I read online about Scratch: "There’s a Trimurti of artists who straddle the same fence between genius and insanity, firmly rooted in their respective genres, yet their personas and catalogues shatter expectations of what a recording artist should be.
Jazz had Sun Ra with his elongated big-band experiments, capes of plumage and Afro-cosmic prose. Funk was gifted George Clinton with his acid-fuelled family jams, luminous dreadlocks and a penchant for wearing nappies on stage. And reggae, a genre replete with innumerable nutcases, has Lee “Scratch” Perry flying the flag for laissez-faire eccentricity at the ripe old age of 80." (He's now 83)
And: "The sounds inside Lee “Scratch” Perry’s head changed the world – reggae and rap wouldn’t exist without him and he did it all without ever learning to play an instrument or make a damn bit of sense". 😂 🇯🇲 🎶 #Jamaica#Reggae#DubReggae#Ska#Rocksteady#Music#Legend#TheUpsetters
