🏈 Patrick Mahomes suffered a acute dislocation or subluxation of his patella. We have seen a much more significant knee joint dislocation in the past such as the one Teddy Bridgewater and Zach Miller (shown in video) had. You can see in the video the chiefs training staff relocating his patella by gliding it medially while extending his leg, which essentially slides the train (patella) back on his tracks (into the trochlear groove). .
📖 The patellofemoral joint is part of the knee joint and is made up of the patella sitting inside the trochlear groove of the femoral condyles. Like I mentioned before, the train is the patella and the trochlear groove of the femoral condlyes of the knee are the train tracks. Normally a patella dislocates laterally (to the outside). When that happens it usually disrupts the medial patellofemoral ligament, which is one of the supporting structures that helps keep the train on the tracks and holds the patella medially which prevents it from gliding too much laterally. .
⁉️Why does this injury matter? Patellar dislocations cause the knee to lock up and not allow for a smooth line of pull of the quadriceps musculature and that is why Mahomes stayed on the ground and could not bend his knee until the chiefs training staff glided his patella medially back into the trochlear groove. Redislocation rates after conservative care has been found to be 15-44%, which is why we haven’t heard a definitive timeline for Mahomes return from the chiefs. If he does return he will need to play with a brace that provides support to the outside of his knee so that his patella does not slide back out laterally. .
🥼Prognosis: Out 3-4 weeks, although he was back at practice today, I don’t think it is realistic to expect him back this week. I ultimately think Mahomes will need surgery to repair his medial patellofemoral ligament in order to prevent chronic dislocations but that can be done in the offseason. .
