I’m in a transition period in my life right now and it’s the start of the most scary thing I’ve ever done. And that makes me super excited.
I got into a 4 hour intense conversation with a woman on a plane yesterday from Dallas after learning she was going to New Zealand to visit hobbiton because she’s always wanted to do it as a child. I congratulated her and said i was jealous which turned into a deep exploration of childhood dreams and how they affect us as adults. We spoke about our childhoods. The good, the bad, the confusing, the parts we can’t tell close friends but would tell complete strangers. She spoke about being divorced twice before and the shame and sadness that often times comes with. I spoke about my hurts as a young adult and a child and how they have changed my outlook on people and life in general. .
During the conversation she said “i only have two sayings about life. (To which i can only remember the 2nd one that stood out to me. Lol) The 2nd saying (the one i can remember) - “sometimes, life is just weird.” We continued our intense and completely authentic conversation for the rest of the flight, during which we both cried at one point (yes, men cry) and learned things about each other and even ourselves. As the flight began to decent the woman stated how it was the fastest 4 hour flight she had ever been on thanks to our unexpected conversation. I agreed and asked if i could add to her life saying. She said yes. .
“Sometimes, life is weird. Keep it that way” .
As a 22 year old man, usually i wouldn’t be the person to have an intense/authentic conversation with a woman in her mid 40s unless there was inappropriate intentions involved (which happens, and is weird, and isn’t talked about often) but this was not the case. I encourage you to realize in day to day life that as different as we are... we truly are all the same. We all have insecurities, doubt, shame, guilt, Love, passions, Hopes and dreams. We all have an sense of fear to open up or explore a new found friendship with a stranger. It just takes one person to jump past that fear. To bare their soul. Show them that we are the same to create something beautiful.
