South Korea resumes production of K2 Black Panther main battle tank for the Republic of Korea Army.
First two K2 Black Panther MBTs from the 2nd production batch rolled out of Hyundai Rotem factory today.
Hyundai Rotem had already produced several dozen tanks, which have been left in storage awaiting installation of powerpacks.
Production was delayed for two years due to technical issues with domestic transmission developed by S&T. After a long delay, a decision was made to equip the 2nd production batch with German-Korean power packs which consist of German transmission and Korean engine. The powerpack passed all required tests earlier this year, which included 3,200 km cross-country trial and low temperature test.
106 tanks of the 2nd production batch are set to be delivered by 2021 and plan for 3rd production batch is currently being finalized.
The Republic of Korea Army currently operates approximately 100+ K2 Black Panther tanks produced under the 1st batch. These tanks are equipped with German engine and transmission.
