SMILE! It’s Friday and life is good 😉 I always make a list of things I’m grateful for in the morning 🙏🏽 it starts my day on a positive note and makes me extra excited and happy for everything I have. What is one thing you’re grateful for today? ❤️ Tell me in the comments 👇🏽
After school, my host father asked me if I wanted to visit their family rice fields in the next village. Of course, I said yes! 🌿
However, I also wanted to go for a run so he drove his scooter to the fields and I ran there (after he dropped a pin on my google maps for the location 😬). The locale here is absolutely beautiful, completely untouched nature - a part of Bali you don’t see in guide books or Instagram... because really there are no westerners in this part of the island 🛵🏃🏻♂️
Upon arriving at the rice fields and adjoining farm, we sat with the family that tends the land and enjoyed coffee and cookies together before walking in the fields a little bit ☕️🍪
We explored the Balinese rice fields which were also home to many dragon fruit (photos #2 and #3), cassava (photo #4), and “Bali orange” plants (photos #1 and #6) - the perimeter also littered with healthy coconut trees. I have never seen or heard of a “Bali orange” before - think green outer skin like a lime, white membrane like some citrus fruits, an appearance inside identical to a grapefruit, but much less sweet and not sour at all - how cool! 🍈🍊🥥
Then as we were walking back, I noticed that the coconuts on the coconut tree weren’t like the brown or green ones I’ve seen before. They were a dull yellow color and more oval in shape. I asked Komang what these tasted like - he said “you never tasted these Bali coconut before? Ok, let’s try it now” 😅
I was not expecting what happened next... he actually just started climbing up the coconut tree with a curved knife and then cut a few down for us to try right then! 🧗🏽♂️🔪 The taste was refreshing (especially after that long run) - almost tasted like soda water with a bit of fizz and a slightly stronger, more pungent flavor than a young green coconut 🌴
I’m very lucky to have such a warm and welcoming host family in Amlupura 💚
