Shoot any film lately? I traveled for two months and shot 66 rolls. I wish I’d shot more. .
December 13th, 2018, I left Chicago in a red, two-door, stickshift, 1988 BMW 325ix, with my Nikon F5, a bunch of film, and an enormous broadsword. I took two and a half weeks to travel across the American west, to Los Angeles. This was a stunningly beautiful road trip and I went wild shooting, going through 29 rolls. Arrived in LA on December 28th. On January 1st my plane took off at 10:30PM, and I arrived in Wellington, New Zealand on January 3rd. .
I spent 8 days in Wellington and then toured the south island for about a month. By some strange coincidence, I also shot 29 rolls in this period. Getting pro film like Ektar and Velvia is tough in New Zealand, so I ended up shooting a lot of Kodak Gold 200 and Ultramax 400. The south island is stunning and rugged; most of the outdoor shots from the Lord of the Rings trilogy were filmed there. .
For my last week, I went back to the north island to visit Hobbiton and do the Tongariro crossing, an all-day hike that passes by Mt. Ngaurahoe, used in the LOTR films as Mt. Doom. While passing back through Wellington I took the opportunity to re-stock on good film. It was there that I saw the only roll of Velvia 50 I ever saw for sale in New Zealand. It was hideously expensive. I bought it. I wasn’t about to show up at Mt. Doom without the good stuff. I shot 8 rolls total on my north island adventure. By February 14th, my plane was landing in LAX. I’ve been settling into my new home city since then. .
This week I start getting this all developed. .
