“Wow I love your earrings, where’d you get them??” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ •Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production•
Consumerism: a social and economic order which plays off people’s insecurities, encouraging the constant acquisition of goods in ever-increasing amounts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
The fashion industry nets approx. 2.5 trillion dollars annually, but not without our social, economic, and environmental systems paying a hefty price.
Fast fashion is a prime example of our current disposable culture model. Did you know that roughly 80 billion pieces of clothing are consumed globally every year? Garments are now being worn less and discarded at a rate faster than ever before- enough to fill 1.5 Empire State Buildings every DAY.
This fast-paced, cheaply produced clothing and textile production chain promotes high carbon emissions, toxic wastewater production, microfibre/micro-plastic pollution in our oceans, and LARGE amounts of landfill waste. It is also one of the leading supporters of modern slavery across the globe.
97% of our clothes come from overseas, most commonly from developing countries where both adults and children are exploited, working long shifts in dangerous/ inhumane circumstances for incredibly low pay. A study in Bangladesh after the collapse of the Dhaka garment factory found that 9 out of 10 workers could not even afford enough food for themselves and their families, even when working 12 hour days.
As consumers in a supply/ demand economy, it is up to us to shop consciously, demand sustainable goods that support fair trade production, and work to break the habits of a toss-away culture on a non-discardable planet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fastfashion#consumerism#disposableculture#kashmonet#globalcitizen#sustainabledevelopmentgoals#instaart#fineart#artist#designer#3dart#conceptualart#digitalart#digitalartist#art#design#visualart#conceptualartist#makearteveryday#gallery#studio#abstract#original#dailydesign#2020#artcollection#globalissues#humanitarian
