Did I ever tell you how I wrote a book? No, not the fact that I wrote one, but literally HOW I did it?
Last year in the County, I came up with a caption for a post on @artofnock's Instagram. He didn't think it fit, so we didn't use it, but I liked the line so much I wrote it down in a notebook and it started flowing. I got the idea from a dream I'd had nearly two years prior, but had never put pen to paper. I wrote day in and day out. I started on the picnic benches outside the @pictonharbourinn (while waiting for a table, which according to @countytshirts is a common theme!); I sussed out characters at the beach at @sandbankspp; I made structural changes at my table at @waupoosestateswinery; I wrote so long into the night, I'd wake up in my @airbnb still clutching a notebook and pen. By the end of the week, I'd written a five-part novella, beginning, middle, and end.
It all starts with a line and a place to do your thinking. There's something so great about finding a good thinking spot. Depending on what you do, you might need some WiFi, or a strong coffee, or air conditioning to really get some good thinking done, but for me, I need a bench (if I'm feeling fancy, then maybe even an ornate bench, like this one at @glenwoodcemetery), a notebook, and a pen, and I'm all set to go.
