The time has come; we’re sitting at the airport terminal, drinking our last “Maza” mango juices and looking back at the golden memories we’ve captured. That’s my brother and I in the picture, and believe it or not we had absolutely no idea we were being photographed. We were simply trying and failing to take in everything in front of our eyes.
I want to say something about the entire trip, the kind of something that’ll echo in the depths of your brain for hours after you actually read it. But the truth is nothing I can say will ever actually encompass all of Pakistan. Nothing will be able to capture the visceral rawness that the Kaghan Valley evoked, or the delirious frenzy Lahore caught me in, or the blissfully understated riches I found in a forgotten Punjabi village. Just know that Pakistan, like so many other places in the world, is worth so much more than your apprehension.
Pakistan is flawed, yes, that much is made clear to you from all the xenophobic BS on the news and the Eurocentric BS in your textbooks. But Pakistanis want positive change more than anything. And they’re working so, so hard for it. You’ll find our ambition in our prime minister, in our calluses, in our jazbaa. So maybe make some space for love and respect alongside that apprehension. #travelpakistan#lulusarlake#nayapakistan#kaghan#siblings#lake#mountains#stopignorance
