It all starts in the mouth. – why do we chew?
I’m sure you have either heard it before or maybe you’ve said it to someone; “chew your food”, but what is the purpose of chewing & why is it important?
Chewing is actually the first step in our digestion & is commonly known as mechanical digestion due to its action. There are four key reasons for practicing correct chewing techniques.
1.It allows the food we eat to be broken down into smaller particles. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
These smaller particles not only allow us to swallow our food more easily but also allow a greater surface area for contact with digestive enzymes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
2.It allows our food to mix with important enzymes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
While predominant in the middle to lower parts of the digestive tract (stomach & beyond), digestive enzymes also exist in the mouth & are secreted from the three salivary glands which surrounding our oral cavity & are stimulated by the chewing action. These enzymes primarily take care of the first stages of carbohydrate breakdown (salivary amylase). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3.It serves to help our further digestion
The smaller particles formed through chewing also help to decreases transit time later in our digestive tract as the smaller particles are more easily broken down & increase the rate of gastric emptying. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4.It aids in nutrient availability. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Plant matter contains an indigestible fibre source called cellulose. These cellulose cells contain important & essential vitamins & minerals needed for optimal health. By thoroughly chewing our foods we are able to smash these cell walls & free up the nutrients for better digestion later in our digestive system. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is what I’m calling #beastmode for meal prep! I worked overnight last night, I slept today, did the soccer mom thing, cleaned up the house, and then made sure I was ready for success for this week with my Ultimate Reset cleanse meals and supplements. I will hopefully have a one week comparison photo tomorrow, although I did slip up some this past week but overall I have been feeling great while doing this cleanse. Let’s see what week two brings!

There is no better way to end the weekend than to spend it eating apple fritters with my kids. I am so grateful for the time that we get to go have fun and I love that my son’s girlfriend wants to join us on our adventures. In case you ever wondered...the bees freaking LOVE apple cider and fritters almost as much as we do!🐝🐝 Alexis and I are not playing! 😂
